 The Ride-by-Nights
By Walter de la Mare ハロウィーンの素敵な絵本を見つけました。
The Ride-by-Nights は、1873年生まれのイギリス人 Walter de la Mare の 子ども向けの詩集 ”Peacock Pie” の一篇を絵本にしたものです。 短い詩なので、全文を引用します。 ”Up on their brooms the Witches stream,
Crooked and black in the crescent’s gleam, One foot high, and one foot low, Bearded, cloaked, and cowled they go. ’Neath Charlie’s Wain they twitter and tweet, And away they swarm ’neath the Dragon’s feet, With a whoop and a flutter they swing and sway, And surge pell-mell down the Milky Way. Between the legs of the glittering Chair They hover and squeak in the empty air. Then round they swoop past the glimmering Lion To where Sirius barks behind huge Orion; Up, then, and over to wheel amain, Under the silver, and home again.” (From Peacock Pie: A Book of Rhymes, London: Constable and Co., 1913) 魔女たちが楽しげに騒ぎながら、夜空に浮かぶ星の中を箒に乗って駆け巡る様子は、ハロウィーンにぴったりな情景。
Carolina Rabei の素敵なイラストのこの絵本では、夜空を駆け巡る魔女たちにまったく気付かないで、Trick-or-treatingに出かける家族が同時に描かれています。 家族は犬を連れて、魔女たちはもちろん黒猫を連れています。何故かガマガエルが一人で箒に乗っているのも微笑ましい。 魔女たちがふざけていて帽子を落として子どもが拾ったり、 子ども用のお菓子を魔女がいたずらで奪ったりと、 地上と上空の登場人物たちが時々交差します。 日本語版のタイトルは、『ハロウィーンの星めぐり』。 詩の中に、色々な星座が登場するのも楽しい。 Charlie’s Wainは、北斗七星、the Dragon りゅう座、 the Milky way 天の川、(Lady in) the Chair カシオペア、 the Lion しし座、Orion オリオン座、などなど。 魔女たちが天の川を駆け抜けるページは、とても綺麗で見惚れてしまう。 Walter de la Mareは、小説家でもあり、 幻想的なゴーストストーリーも数多く書いています。 また、哲学的なテーマの長編詩も残していて、 このような可愛らしい絵本は、異色のものかもしれません。 可愛いイラストなのに幻想的な雰囲気があるのは、そのためでしょうか。 ゆったりとした時間の流れを感じる絵本です。
